The present generation has seen the birth of the term "metrosexual," a heterosexual male who, like a female, pays close attention to his personal appearance. These metrosexuals have the most fashionable of clothes and the most updated hairdos, always sleek, combed, and more often than not, slathered with hair product. But even with their existence, women can't be beaten in their fastidiousness in terms of their own physical appearance. Especially when it comes to their hair.

African-Americans seem to have the worst when it comes to hair care. Because African-American hair is naturally thick and kinky almost to the point of being unruly, having weaves attached to their locks is what they resort to (although this process is by no means exclusive to African-Americans). Extensions are stitched very close to the scalp in a so-called "weaving process," hence the term "weave." These extensions then serve as real hair. An alternative to weaves is straightening or “softening” of the curls through chemical and heat treatment.

Most others who do not have the dilemma of unruly locks have fewer issues with hair care. They do have a lot of options in terms of styling, however, which entails closer attention to the care of their tresses.

There are four basic hair colors: blond, auburn, black, and brown. Their hues can vary, as in platinum blond, flaming red, coal black, chestnut brown. You can play with your hair color by having highlights or lowlights, or you can have your hair color changed entirely. Apart from hair color, you can have your hair styled in different ways: have it permed or curled if your hair is straight, or vice versa, get an afro or bangs. But the more you let your hair undergo style treatments, the more protection and nourishment it needs. You don't just wash it with shampoo, rinse, and apply conditioner, and rinse again. You don't just comb or brush it and let it dry through the wind or with a blowdryer.

For both men and women, tons of hair products exist today. There's one for protecting the hair from heat when ironing, volumizing, enhancing curls, achieving that "wet look." There's plain old hair gel and there also are creams now that take care of style-damaged hair. All these are usually infused with nutrients that naturally care for your locks. In this modern age you not only have an increasing number of options in grooming and styling your tresses; you also have the responsibility of providing them optimal hair care and help, if needed, is always at hand whether through your hair stylist or your nearby beauty store.
